2015 Marks Centennial of the State Highway Commission

On March 5, 1915, the North Carolina General Assembly created the State Highway Commission, establishing the first roots of our modern-day Department of Transportation and laying the foundation for a century of tremendous progress in North Carolina.

Over the past century, North Carolina’s transportation system has evolved into a comprehensive network that encompasses highways, rail, aviation, ferries, public transit, and bicycle and pedestrian transportation, all of which play an important role in connecting people to jobs, education, healthcare and recreation centers. Transportation also continues to serve as a catalyst for job creation and economic growth in our state, as well as supporting overall quality of life and new opportunity for our communities.
