Malcolm K. Fearing, III

Malcolm K. Fearing of Manteo was appointed to the N.C. Board of Transportation in April 2013 to represent NCDOT Division 1, which includes Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hertford, Hyde, Martin, Northampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell and Washington counties.

Fearing is partial owner of Outer Banks Insurance Agency and The Fearing Realty LLC in Dare County. Originally from Manteo, Fearing started work as a mate on a charter boat at the age of 10. The fishing industry brought Fearing from Manteo to New Jersey, Hawaii and eventually Australia before returning to Dare County to work in the family business.

Fearing is a graduate of Manteo High School and has been involved in local civic organizations during his time in Dare County. He has previously served as president of the Manteo Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow, finance chairman and board member for the Roanoke Island Commission, chairman of the board for the Dare County Community Center, commissioner for the town of Manteo and volunteer for the Roanoke Island Volunteer Fire Department. He has also served on the Roanoke Voyages Corridor Committee and was a member of the Manteo Lions Club. Fearing is currently on the board for the Coastal Studies Institute and is a member of the North Carolina Independent Insurance Association. He was also an active member of the Dare County School Improvement Committee.

Part of a family that has resided in Dare County for more than 100 years, Fearing and his wife live in Manteo, along with his mom, his three married children and four grandchildren. Fearing is an active member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church where he has taught Sunday school, and he and wife were named Lay Leader of the Year.
