Hugh R. Overholt

Major General Hugh R. Overholt (USA Ret.) is a member of the Firm of Ward and Smith, P.A.

General Overholt was born in Beebe, Arkansas. He attended College of the Ozarks and the University of Arkansas. He was awarded a Bachelor of Arts Degree and Juris Doctor from the University of Arkansas where he served on the Editorial Board of the Law Review. Upon completion of his law studies, he received an appointment as a First Lieutenant in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps. General Overholt’s military schooling includes the JAGC Basic and Advanced Courses, Airborne School, Command and General Staff College and the National Defense University.

While on active duty, General Overholt served in a variety of assignments. He was an Assistant Staff Judge Advocate, United States Army Field Artillery Training Center, Fort Chafee Arkansas; United States Army Aviation Center, Fort Rucker, Alabama; Seventh United States Army Support Command, Europe; and Deputy Staff Judge Advocate, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The Staff Judge Advocate, Seventh Infantry Division, Korea. General Overholt was the Director of the Academic Department and Chief of the Criminal Law Division of the Judge Advocate General’s School, Charlottesville, Virginia; Chief Personnel Plan and Training Office, Office of the Judge Advocate General, Headquarters Department of the Army, Washington, D.C. As Colonel, he served as Staff Judge Advocate, XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Special Assistant for Legal and Selected Policy Matters, Office of the Assistant Secretary Defense (Manpower Reserve Affairs and Logistics), Washington, D.C. Following his promotion to Brigadier General, General Overholt served as Assistant Judge Advocate for Military Law. In 1981, he was appointed Assistant Judge Advocate General, and in 1985, he was named The Judge Advocate General.

General Overholt has been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal (Oak Leaf Cluster), Legion of Merit, Department of Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (Oak Leaf Cluster), and the Army Commendation Medal (Two Oak Leaf Clusters).

General Overholt is a Member of the Arkansas Bar, North Carolina Bar, District of Columbia Bar and a Member of the American Bar Association.

He is married to the former Laura Annell (Ann) Arnold of Blakely, Georgia. The Overholts have two children, Sharon and Scott.
