Mike Charbonneau leads all communication efforts for the NCDOT. He is responsible for the strategic development, integration and implementation of a broad range of public relations activities and integrated print and online communications; media relations; marketing; and public awareness and education programs.
He has more than 15 years of communications experience, primarily in journalism.
Before joining the NCDOT, Charbonneau served as the director of public relations for the Wake County Public School system, the largest in North Carolina and 16th largest school system in the nation. As a member of the Family and Community Engagement team he worked to ensure effective communication with families and promote the success stories of students, teachers, and classrooms throughout the district.
Charbonneau spent more than eight years working as a reporter, photographer, and multimedia producer for WRAL News in Raleigh. He covered Eastern North Carolina and served as the station’s first multimedia education reporter. Prior to that, he covered the military and coastal issues for WNCT-TV in Greenville, where he was also a member of the investigative reporting team. During his journalism career, he earned two regional Emmy awards, a national Emmy award nomination, and an Associated Press award.
Charbonneau has a Bachelors degree from N.C. State University in Mass Communication and a Masters from N.C. State in Communication with a focus in Public Relations.
