Renewal:

Before your license expires, the DMV will mail you a reminder card explaining the number of years it will be valid. The reminder card is not required in order to renew. If DMV does not have your social security number on file, you must present your social security card at the time of issuance. If you are not eligible for a social security card, you must present documentation issued by the US Government indicating legal presence. If you do not have your current or expired license at renewal, you will be required to show the examiner two documents of identification. Requirements

The vision and traffic sign recognition tests are always required for a license renewal. The road test requirement is at the discretion of the Examiner. No driving skills test will be initiated after 4:00pm.

Note: You may renew your license by mail if you are temporarily residing outside North Carolina for 30 or more days or if you are serving in the armed forces on active duty and are stationed outside the state. North Carolina General Statute 20-7(f) authorizes the Division to impose any conditions it finds advisable when issuing a renewal by mail. Therefore, it will be necessary that you meet certain criteria prior to the Division issuing the license. The license issued will be temporary and will expire either five or eight years (depending on your age), from renewal on your birthday or 60 days after you return to North Carolina, whichever date occurs first. Replacement

If your license is lost or stolen, go to the nearest Driver License Office and apply for a duplicate. To replace a lost or stolen license, you must show the examiner two documents of identification approved by the DMV.
