Driving Safely
Adverse driving conditions can lead to accidents.
The seven adverse conditions are:
- Light Condition
- Weather Condition
- Road Condition
- Traffic Condition
- Vehicle Condition
- Driver Condition
- Combination of all of the above
Review details on the seven adverse conditions in the School Bus Driver's Handbook.
School bus drivers must also be familiar with the safe driving requirements that apply to all Commercial Vehicles requiring a CDL as outlined in the Commercial Driver's Handbook.
More than any other factor, the condition of the driver determines the safety of the passengers. One study showed
that about 95 percent of all accidents are caused by driver error. Therefore, the driver must be mentally and physically
prepared to drive every minute of every trip.
Alcohol and drugs make the driver unfit to drive. As a school bus driver, no amount of alcohol is tolerated. A Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of 0.04 percent or greater will
cost you your Commercial Drivers License (CDL). Additional ways to ensure proper driver condition are outlined in the School Bus Driver's Handbook.
