DMV Requires U.S.DOT Number
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
This only applies to individuals/businesses crossing state boundaries engaged in trade, traffic, or transportation of goods, property and passengers. This also includes vehicles transporting hazardous materials within this state.
The division recently reviewed its vehicle registration records and determined that some individuals/businesses may have a vehicle(s) currently registered in this state which meets one or more of the following federal motor carrier safety administration’s requirements to obtain a USDOT number.
- Vehicles that are over 10,000 pounds
- If you transport between 9 and 15 passengers (including driver) for compensation,
- If you transport 16 or more passengers, or
- Haul hazardous materials
A USDOT number is required for carriers participating in interstate commerce and the division must record the number in its database.
If you already have a USDOT number established. Please complete the the “USDOT response document” and forward it to the division.
If you do not have a USDOT number, you can apply online at www.fmcsa.dot.gov. Click on registration and licensing and follow the instructions. You may also obtain a USDOT application by calling 1-800-832-5660. A USDOT number is free of charge.
After receiving your USDOT number from FMCSA, please complete the “USDOT response document” and forward it to the division.
