Applying for a Duplicate Title?
If the original title for a vehicle has been lost, the registered owner can apply for a duplicate title
by following these steps:
- Complete the
Application for a Duplicate Title (MVR-4),
in the presence of a notary. The application must be completed exactly the same as
the original title was issued.
- Furnish a $15.00 duplicate title fee.
- If the original title has a lien on the vehicle, the lienholder must complete the
bottom portion of MVR-4 in the presence of a notary or furnish a lien release
- All applications for duplicate titles must age 15 days.
- Mail completed and notarized form and title fee to N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles, 3148 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-3148.
What if I never received my title?
If you have not received your vehicle's title you will have to complete the above steps for a "Duplicate Title".
There is an exception, however, of having the duplicate title fee waived if the original title is mailed within
60 days of requesting a duplicate.
