Traffic Services
Division Traffic Engineer - Dan Cumbo, P.E.

The Traffic Engineering and Traffic Services staff are responsible for the installation and maintenance of traffic signals, highway signs, and pavement markings. We investigate requests for new signs and signals, usually looking at roadway operating conditions and accident or "crash" history.

While maintenance funds are renewed each year, funds for new work must be requested on a per project basis, and are evaluated in Raleigh based on the severity of need as compared to other projects statewide.  We have about thirty permanent employees and up to twenty seasonal temporary employees who  inspect, repair, replace, and install new signs; stripe roads with centerlines and edgelines; mark STOP bars, arrows, and other symbols on the road; install and repair traffic signals;  and perform a variety of traffic engineering investigations.  We receive and evaluate requests for "service", directional, and "LOGO" signs.
