The purpose of the NCDOT Equipment Roadeo is to:
serve as a training tool to improve and recognize the driving skills of participating employees;
create a keen interest in equipment operation ability that will contribute to the Department's Fleet Safety Program;
The ultimate goal is to establish pride in the safe maintenance and operation of equipment, thus reducing incidents.
The Truck Competition Division Champion and Runner-up represent Division 6 at the NCDOT State Competition in Raleigh. The Division Champion and Runner-up are determined through an equipment inspection exercise and through their skill in navigating a single axle dump truck through an obstacle course.
The Backhoe Competition Division Champion represents Division 6 at the NCDOT State Competition in Raleigh. The Division Champion is determined through an exercise in which three golf balls are placed in a sandbox. The bucket on the backhoe is fitted with a special "spoon" attachment. The operator must pick of each of the golf balls and proceed to place them in one of three canisters that vary from three to six inches in diameter. The operator must complete the exercise within three minutes.
