Guidelines and Rules for Writing Contest
All third grade students in Union County are invited to participate in a writing contest. This contest is sponsored by the Union County Rotary Clubs and is called "Yes! Yes! We Can Stop Litter!" The subject is litter and the effect it has on our environment and the appearance of our homes, schools, neighborhoods and roadsides. Students will be asked to write a news article about litter.
- All schools (principals) will receive information concerning the writing contest.
- Participation is voluntary on the part of the school.
- Schools will received a copy of the guidelines and rules as well as a booklet of the activities and resources to help implement and complete the writing contest.
- Students will be asked to write a news article about litter and what it does to our environment and th appearance of our homes, schools, neighborhoods and the roadsides.
- Teachers will guide students through the steps of the writing process. Students will plan, write a rough draft, conference, revise and edit at school, and may type or write the final copy at home. Articles must be no less than 100 words and no more than 200 words. Students must write or type on one side of the paper and double space.
- News articles will be judged on content, ideas, originality, mechanics and overall effectiveness.
- Each teacher will select two students' news articles and sent to the school's judging committee. Each school will be responsible for selecting the one winning news article to represent the school. The procedure for determining the winner will be left up to the individual school.
- The student's full name, teacher's name and the school name should be written on the back of the paper. Don not write this information on the front.
- The winning article from each school will be made available to a Rotary Committee to select the county winner.
