In the course of highway construction, soils are selected for the purpose of supporting various pavements and structures. Soil horizons are arbitrarily exposed during grading operations and little consideration is given to the nutrient requirements for the establishment and long term support of vegetation. This situation is overcome through the prudent use of fertilizers and other soil amendments during vegetation establishment and periodically thereafter to insure its survival.
