Seed

Seeding is by far the most economical method of establishing a vegetative cover over large areas. In keeping with the Sedimentation and Erosion Control Act of 1977, the Division of Highways utilizes several types of seeded material to establish temporary and permanent erosion control.

All seed purchased by the Roadside Environmental Unit is tested for purity and germination by the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

Cool-Season Warm-season
Tall Fescue Centipedegrass
Hard Fescue Bermudagrass
Kentucky Bluegrass Zoysiagrass
  Pensacola Bahiagrass

German Millet Weeping Lovegrass
Rye Grain Sericea Lespedeza
Kobe Lespedeza Bicolor Lespedeza
Sweet Sudan Korean Lespedeza
  Crown Vetch

In addition, the Roadside Environmental Unit purchases wildflower seed for right-of-way beautification. The Vegetation Management Section is also responsible for growing, harvesting, and distributing several types of native wildflower seed.
