Major Intermodal Terminals

Intermodal Terminals represent a location where the transfer of goods from one mode to another occurs. These locations are sometimes referred to as inland ports or inland terminals due to the high volume of freight transfers. There are two major train-truck transfer stations in the state: Charlotte Inland Terminal (CIT) and Piedmont Triad Inland Terminal (PTIT) located in Greensboro. These terminals are expected to experience substantial increases in cargo transfers over the next few years resulting from increased traffic at the State's seaports. Currently, the majority of air-truck transfers occur at the six major airports in the State. In the future however, the potential exists for this type of transfer to occur additionally at the Global TransPark in Kinston.
