Study Process
Updated October 28, 2009
December 2007 - The US 64 Corridor Study begins.
Winter/Spring 2008 - The Study Team reviews existing conditions, analyzes long-term concepts, and develops three options for the
long-term plan.
May 2008 - The Study Team holds Workshop #1 in Apex and Pittsboro. The Team presents the purpose and need of the study and the
initial three options of the long-term plan.
Summer/Fall 2008 - Study Team reviews comments from Workshop #1, and recommends a fourth long-term option, which is a combination
of the first three options. The design and characteristics of Alternative #4 are based the public comments and professional staff input.
Winter 2008/2009 - Study Team analyzes short-term concepts and recommends the superstreet concept for the short-term plan. The
Study Team also develops the video simulation of the Alternative #4 for the long-term solution, and conducts the land use assessment.
April 2009 - The Study Team holds Workshop #2 held in Apex and Pittsboro. The Team presents the Alternative #4 as the recommended
long-term solution (including the video simulation), and the superstreet concept as the recommended short-term solution. The draft land
use assessment and draft implementation are also presented.
July 2009 - In an effort to respond to citizen questions and comments, the Study Team holds a community meeting in Cary.
The purpose of the meeting was for Study Team representatives to provide information and answer questions regarding the planning study.
August 2009 - The Study Team reviews comments and concerns received during spring/summer 2009. The Study Team re-evaluates

based on the workshop discussion, and finalizes the DRAFT Corridor Study Report. This report will encompass the entire study effort which began in
December 2007, and will include all the analyses and recommendations.
January 2010 (Planned) - The Study Team provides the DRAFT Corridor Study Report for a minimum 30-day public comment period.
Winter 2010 (Planned) - The Study Team makes changes to the recommendations, if necessary, and finalizes the US 64 Corridor Study Report.
Implementation
Updated April 2009
The evaluation of the US 64 corridor includes the development of a plan that will aid in implementing the recommendations of the
study, for both the short-term and long-term solutions. The Implementation Plan includes several key elements to help guide the
transition of the corridor from the existing conditions, through the short-term and long-term improvements, and includes the following
information:
- Determining potential strategies for funding the improvements
- Segmenting the corridor into smaller pieces to allow for incremental development
- Determining the priority and life-span of the short-term strategies
- Determining the priority of the long-term strategies
- Developing options for transitioning the short-term strategies to the long-term strategies
The primary product of the phasing plan is the development of maps that will show how the corridor will transition from its existing
state to the long-term solutions in five-year increments.
The final recommendations will be included the US 64 Corridor Study Report upon completion of the study.
