Watauga County
Comprehensive Transportation Plan Study
This Comprehensive Transportation Plan (CTP) study is a long range
plan, which identifies major transportation
improvement needs and develops long term solutions
for the next 25 to 30 years. It is a joint effort
between the Towns of Boone, Blowing Rock, Seven
Devils, and Beech Mountain, Watauga County, the
North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT),
and the High Country Rural Planning Organization.
The CTP study involves both government officials and
the public in an effort to determine the area’s
future transportation needs based on the best
information available including, but not limited to,
population, economic conditions, traffic trends, and
patterns of land development in and around the
county. The study will also include alternative
modes of transportation, such as transit, walking,
and biking. Recommendations to address current and
future capacity deficiencies and that provide for
the safe, efficient, cost-effective, and
environmentally sensitive use of the transportation
system will be made.
Public Workshop
At this time, the Watauga County Comprehensive
Transportation Plan Steering Committee would like to
request feedback from the public concerning their
recommendations and to receive additional
recommendations for addressing highway deficiencies
at a public workshop scheduled for April 26, 2012
from 4:30 PM -7:30 PM in the Watauga County
Commissioners Room. The public is invited to attend
the workshop to review the deficiencies that have
been identified, review the Steering Committee’s
recommendations, and provide additional
recommendations for the Steering Committee to
consider. After comments have been received, they
will be presented to the Steering Committee for
consideration. A draft Comprehensive Transportation
Plan, which will include recommendations for all
transportation modes, will be prepared and presented
at a later date for public review.
Date: April 26, 2012
Time: 4:30 PM – 7:30 PM
Location: Watauga County Commissioners Room
Socio-Economic Data
The Watauga County CTP Committee worked with NCDOT
to estimate population growth, economic development
potential, and land use trends to determine the
potential impacts on the future transportation
system in 2040.
The committee and all local governments approved
current and projected socio-economic data that was
used to project future traffic demands around the
county.
Public
Survey
A public survey concerning the CTP was administered
from January to March, 2011. The CTP Steering
Committee used the survey results to assist with the
development of a Vision Statement as well as Goals
and Objectives which were then approved by the local
governments.
