As a part of the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the mission of the State Road Maintenance Unit is to provide resources for the development, implementation and administration of comprehensive statewide maintenance programs. We achieve the mission by:
- Administering and monitoring statewide programs
- Supporting our field divisions in their implementation of statewide programs
- Providing resources and research data to our field divisions
SRMU oversees the NCDOT Information and Mapping Unit who provide information and maps of the NCDOT state maintained highway system which are vital to administrative, planning, operational, and maintenance staff in enhancing NC’s transportation network.

Posted Roads is a system which records any secondary road on the State Highway System that is unable to carry heavy vehicles or equipment. Roads are posted to avoid damage to the roadway.
As roads are improved and strengthened, they may be removed from this list. If you need information about a specific road in a specific county, contact the appropriate district engineer.

The Disaster Recovery Section provides support to both internal and external forces in responding to and recovering from federally declared and non-declared state disasters. When activated, this section conducts its operations out of the State Emergency Operations Center. It is the liaison between NCDOT and other members of the State Emergency Response Team.

Release Request Form
A Memorandum Of Agreement (MOA) is a formal agreement between NCDOT and local governments in which NCDOT releases authority to local governments to pick up and dispose of storm related vegetative debris from NCDOT secondary routes after a federal emergency declaration is made.
The release allows local governments to be eligible for direct FEMA reimbursement for their debris operation expenses.
