The Fortify project has taken a major step forward. For the first time since the project started, motorists are now driving on a section of newly constructed roadway. Crews have shifted traffic on I-440 West between U.S. 264 and the I-40/440 split from the two outside lanes to the two newly constructed inside lanes. This will allow crews to safely start digging up and rebuilding the outside lanes.
As motorists get used to the new traffic pattern, NCDOT urges them to observe the 55 mph speed limit and reminds them not to stop in the work zone. If an accident occurs, drivers are advised to either stay in the car until help arrives or pull off on the Poole Road exit ramp, if possible, to ensure safety.
A traffic switch on I-440 East is planned for later this summer.
Driving through construction zones can be somewhat tricky, and since motorist safety is NCDOT’s top concern, we offer this advice for travelers navigating the Fortify Project in Raleigh.
