Fayetteville Outer Loop

A new 9.4-mile, four-lane future interstate will begin at the existing Joseph M. Bryan Boulevard / Airport Parkway interchange, cross over N.C. 68, and end south of US 2201 near the Haw River. At the northern end, the project will connect with Project R-2413C that is currently under construction.

The Greensboro Urban Loop which is the proposed I-785/I-840 will help improve congestion on existing I-40, particularly in the area where I-40, I-85 Business and U.S. Routes 29, 70, 220 and 421 all run concurrently.

The I-40 and I-77 interchange in Statesville is a critical intersection of North Carolina. Built in the late 1960s, the current configuration has outlived its original purpose.
I-40/I-440 Rebuild Project - FORTIFY

The project will replace the pavement on I-40 between west of the Jones Franklin Road overpass and the exit for I-440/U.S. 64, and on I-440 between I-40/U.S. 64 and just north of U.S. 264 (Knightdale Bypass), add extra travel lanes and rehabilitate 14 bridges.
I-77 Express Lanes

The I-77 Express Lanes project involves improving 26 miles of I-77 from the Brookshire Freeway (Exit 11) in Mecklenburg County to N.C. 150 (Exit 36) in Iredell County with the inclusion of express lanes.
I-85 Widening and Improvements

This project will add four additional travel lanes (two in each direction) to approximately eight miles of I-85 from north of N.C. 73 (Exit 55) to north of Lane Street (Exit 63) in Cabarrus County. This project will complete the interstate’s expansion through the county, providing a greater level of service for local and through traffic.

This project is necessary to increase safety and improve mobility on U.S. 301 over I-95 at in Lumberton. This project will construct two new bridges to replace the existing bridge over I-95.

N.C. 12 Pea Island Interim Bridge

The interim Pea Island Bridge will replace a temporary metal bridge that was constructed on N.C. 12 to restore traffic following a breach caused by Hurricane Irene in 2011.

This multi-modal project will widen and enhance a section of N.C. 86/South Columbia Street in Chapel Hill from Purefoy Road to Manning Drive.

NCDOT will construct a new 1.1-mile, four-lane road with a median from Martin Luther King Jr. Drive south of Winston-Salem State University to Rams Drive (formerly Stadium Drive) at the Wake Forest Innovation Quarter.
Triangle Expressway

North Carolina's first toll road, the Triangle Expressway, is aimed at improving commuter mobility, accessibility and connectivity to western Wake County and Research Triangle Park while reducing congestion on the existing north-south routes that serve the Triangle Region, primarily N.C. 55 and N.C. 54.

Planning and/or design is underway for these projects. They are generally less than 10 years from right-of-way acquisition or construction. Planning includes examining multiple alternatives and analyzing environmental effects.

Not every project in development will receive funding for right of way or construction. However, planning studies indicate NCDOT is seriously considering implementing the project.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is proposing to extend C.F. Harvey Parkway (N.C. 148) as a four-lane, median-divided freeway with full control of access from N.C. 58 to N.C. 11 on a new location in Lenoir County, north of the city of Kinston. Full control of access means the proposed roadway will not include any driveway connections; rather, access to the proposed roadway will only be allowed at interchanges.
Caldwell Street Widening Project

NCDOT is widening South Caldwell Street between West Jordan Street and Rosman Highway in Brevard from the existing two lanes to three lanes, and replacing drainage structures and sidewalk on Caldwell Street between Probart Street and West Jordan Street.

Long-Range Studies

About Long-Range Studies
These are advanced planning studies that guide NCDOT's decision-making process and future improvements along a corridor or section of roadway. Projects resulting from these studies are generally at least 10 years or more from construction.

Long-range studies can help NCDOT determine which projects should be funded in the future. Even if a project has been the subject of a long-range study, planning studies must still be done before the project can be implemented.

Once an integral and active freight and passenger rail corridor, the Andrews to Murphy rail line in Cherokee County was closed to freight traffic in 1985, following years of economic decline.
