Description
First Phase
- Will open on Dec. 8 2011 – Tolls begin Jan. 3.
- Connects the N.C. 147 and I-40 interchange to N.C. 540 near Research Triangle Park
- Connects N.C. 540 between N.C. 55 and N.C. 54
Second Phase
- Will open in August 2012. Tolls not yet set.
- Connects N.C. 55 near Research Triangle Park to to US 64 in Apex
Third Phase
- Will open in December 2012. Tolls not yet set.
- Connects US 64 in Apex to the N.C. 55 Bypass in Holly Springs

Project Overview and Purpose
The Triangle Expressway will improve commuter mobility, accessibility and connectivity to western Wake County and Research Triangle Park while reducing congestion on the existing north-south routes that serve the Triangle Region, primarily NC 55 and NC 54.
Estimated Cost
The project’s cost is just over $1 billion and is the single largest transportation infrastructure project in North Carolina history.
