| The activities of the Communications Office are fulfilled through two areas: Public Information and Customer Service. |

| Public Information Activities |
| Communications. The Communications Office oversees all internal and external communications for the department. Activities include the preparation and execution of information programs and campaigns related to the department's key objectives. As the clearinghouse for all communications, the Office also coordinates and authorizes related activities generated by Communications Officers employed in separate units within the department. |
| Media Relations. The Communications Office handles general media inquiries and arranges coverage of transportation news stories and events. The Office fosters and maintains relationships with local, state, and national media, including the transportation trade press. The Office also coordinates media interviews with the appropriate department staff person and serves in an advisory capacity on media issues for the Secretary of Transportation, Board of Transportation and staff. |
| Issue Management. The Office routinely works with senior staff to identify "hot topics" or transportation issues of special concern to citizens and communities. In consultation with staff, the Office works with the media and other outlets to keep the public informed about these issues. |
| Crisis Management. The Office oversees the department's response to citizens during major crises such as hurricanes, rock slides or winter weather as well as minor crises such as traffic crashes and isolated incidents. The Office consults with the appropriate DOT staff to determine course of action during crises. The Office also works with other divisions of state government to arrange coordinated responses as needed. |
| Events. The Communications Office works with the Secretary and Board of Transportation to schedule and arrange a variety of ceremonies, including highway and bridge dedications, ribbon cuttings and groundbreakings. Related activities include coordinating logistics, briefing speakers, photography and publicity. |
| Publications. The Communications Office oversees and produces numerous print publications, including the state transportation map, the coastal boating guide, the aviation chart, ferry schedules, and the DOT quick facts brochure. The Office also produces related websites, videotapes and PowerPoint presentations in support of the department's programs and activities. |

| Customer Service Activities |
| As part of the department's outreach to citizens, the Communications Office operates the Customer Service Office (1-877-DOT-4YOU). The Customer Service Office serves as a direct liaison with the public and the department.
