Welcome to the North Carolina Safe Routes to School Web site! Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a program that enables and encourages children to walk and bicycle to school; makes walking and bicycling to school a safe and more appealing transportation option, and facilitates the planning, development, and implementation of projects and activities that will improve safety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption, and air pollution in the vicinity of school.

NCDOT Awards Its First Safe Routes
to School Funds

The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded its first Safe Routes to School program funds with nearly $1.6 million going to 11 municipalities and local agencies through its Demonstration Program and Non-Infrastructure Grant Reimbursement Program. Another 16 communities were awarded an Action Plan Service Award, estimated to be worth a total of $315,000. Combined, these three award programs will improve the safety and opportunity for children to walk and bicycle to school for over 60 schools across the state.

The awards included $1.46 million for six demonstration grants, which can be used to build and repair sidewalks, improve intersections and install bicycle lanes around schools, and $135,450 for five non-infrastructure grants to fund activities such as pedestrian and bicycle safety classes, crossing guard and student safety patrol training, electronic equipment to help enforce traffic laws in school zones and other initiatives that encourage students to walk and bicycle to school.

The Service Award will assist communities in developing a SRTS Action Plan to prioritize and implement a comprehensive SRTS program.
