N.C. 12 Sandbag and Dune Rebuilding Update - 1/28/13

Dune rebuilding is now complete along the part of N.C. 12 just north of Mirlo Beach that was damaged during Hurricane Sandy and a pair of Nor’easters last year. Traffic was restored to its normal pattern over the weekend at the S-Curves.

The contractor completed shaping the shoulders and removing excess and windblown sand. The dune held up very well in Thursday’s high north-to-northwest winds and rough seas. The contactor has demobilized equipment from the site.

NCDOT will put down a final layer of asphalt on the highway this spring, once temperatures are more conducive to the work.

FERRY INFORMATION

Since the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry route suspended operations Jan. 18, the contractor hired by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has removed 102,723 cubic yards of material to a required depth of 10-feet and the project is approximately 65 percent complete by quantity. The Dredge Richmond is currently located in the vicinity of navigation aid 9A.
