NC 12 Recovery Efforts Update 06/05/13
The North Carolina Department of Transportation continues to take steps to secure vulnerable areas of Highway 12 near Rodanthe as part of an emergency declaration to bring short-term relief to communities along the southern Outer Banks until a long-term solution is implemented.
NCDOT is closely monitoring conditions along Highway 12 and working closely with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the necessary environmental documentation as well as to secure required permits necessary to begin the work.
The Corps currently is studying three locations – two offshore near Rodanthe and Oregon Inlet -- as sources of sand to be used for the beach nourishment. In addition to this work, several permits and documents have to be complete in order for the project to begin. Once all of these steps are complete, the Corps can award a contract for the work.
