The Let's Go NC! curriculum project supports NCDOT's mission with an emphasis on providing the education required to connect people and places safely, targeting children at an early age, while enhancing the health and well-being of North Carolina's youth by giving them the tools they need to walk, bike and ride the bus safely to and from schools and within their communities. Furthermore, Let's Go NC! is a response to two statewide outreach efforts in North Carolina:

  1. To address safety initiatives for walking and biking as a result of the 2011 North Carolina Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Summit. The Safety Summit recognized a bicycle and pedestrian education program through the school system with linkages to the NC Standard Course of Study as a high priority action initiative. The creation of Let's Go NC! achieves a portion of the actions outlined in this initiative for children ages Kindergarten through Fifth Grade.
  2. As a response to the 2012 Statewide Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan. This plan provides an update to the 1996 Bicycling and Walking in North Carolina: A Long Range Transportation Plan. Since the 1996 plan, many improvements have been made to address bicycling and walking at the local, regional and state levels. This curriculum has been re-developed based upon input from the 2011 Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Summit and the public outreach in this plan.

Portions of Let's Go NC! are adaptations of or are based upon the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Child Pedestrian Safety Curriculum, the Cycling Skills Clinic Guide, and the North Carolina Department of Transportation's Basics of Bicycling Curriculum.

Special Thanks

Many thanks to those who volunteered their time and efforts to review the curriculum, participate in the focus groups and share their comments throughout the development of Let's Go NC! We sincerely appreciate your commitment to this project and all of the guidance you provided.
