Windsocks are cloth tubes in the shape of cones that gauge wind direction and speed – factors that are very important for pilots when landing and taking off. To help reduce weather-related landing accidents, the Division of Aviation offers– either free or at cost – windsocks to airports in North Carolina.
Obtaining Free Windsocks
Free windsocks are available to:
- Publicly owned-and-operated airports
- Private airports and heliports listed in the Federal Aviation Airport/Facility Directory that are open for public use
- Designated emergency medical service landing sites, such as hospitals
- State agencies that have flight operations, such as the N.C. Department of Transportation's Ferry Division, N.C. State Highway Patrol, N.C. National Guard and N.C. Forest Service

Private airports and heliports that are for private use only can purchase windsocks at the following costs:

Prices are at-cost and include a fee for shipping and handling.
A check or money order, payable to NCDOT - Division of Aviation, should be mailed along with a request form to the address below.
