A first of its kind, the N.C. Multimodal Statewide Freight Plan – commonly referred to as the Statewide Freight Plan – identifies transportation and logistics investments that support economic growth across North Carolina.
Statewide Freight Plan
The N.C. Department of Transportation has created an effective, actionable Statewide Freight Plan that:
- Sets specific multimodal transportation goals, strategies and actions designed to increase jobs, improve economic competitiveness, and enhance quality of life.
- Provides clear, compelling freight-specific recommendations that support the 25-year vision for strategic transportation corridors and addresses the criteria in the Strategic Transportation Investments prioritization process.
- Offers strategies to help elected officials, industry and community stakeholders, taxpayers, voters and the general public better understand the value of freight transportation investments and their economic benefits.
- Meets the federal government’s Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act requirements and ensures that North Carolina can utilize National Freight Program funds. The act requires states to develop comprehensive freight plans and encourages them to establish freight advisory committees. North Carolina has established a Statewide Freight Advisory Committee as well as six Regional Freight Advisory Councils.
Additionally, several industry-specific supply chain and logistics profiles were developed:
These supply chain and logistics profiles identify industries that most significantly drive demand for freight transportation, along with existing and emerging industries driving the state's economy and future growth.
