RALEIGH- The N.C. Department of Transportation has closed the bridge on Old Mountain Road over Interstate 40 near Statesville today to repair the deck.
NCDOT Bridge Maintenance employees were patching a pothole on the bridge Thursday morning when they discovered a portion of the concrete deck was deteriorated and needed to be replaced. The bridge was closed and the following alternate route has been set up:
- Traffic traveling north on Old Mountain Road will take Interstate 40 East to Exit 146 (Stamey Farm Road) to I-40 West back to Old Mountain Road. Traffic traveling south on Old Mountain Road will take I-40 West to Exit 141 (Sharon School Road) to I-40 East back to Old Mountain Road.
NCDOT crews will chip out the old concrete and pour in new concrete that will replace the deck. It is anticipated that lanes on I-40 will not have to be closed for this procedure. NCDOT is planning to reopen the bridge by Christmas, weather permitting; however, if the repairs are more extensive, the closure may last longer.
