Motorists are advised to take I-85 North to Exit 42
CHARLOTTE -Emergency crews have closed I-85 North at Poplar Tent Road (Exit 52) in Concord following an accident involving a tractor trailer and pickup truck. The tractor trailer was transporting an 80,000 pound concrete slab that loosened and fell onto the roadway. NCDOT is working with other agencies to mobilize a large crane capable of removing the slab.
At this time, Incident Management Patrol is assisting local law enforcement and the State Highway Patrol with detouring traffic at Bruton Smith Boulevard (Exit 49). Motorists traveling through Charlotte to University City or points north can take the following exits:
- Exit 42 (U.S. 29/N.C. 49) -bear right off I-85 North and follow to U.S. 29 North or N.C. 49 North;
- Exit 43 (City Boulevard) -turn right off the exit ramp and follow to N.C. 49 North or U.S. 29 North;
- Exit 45 (Harris Boulevard) -turn right off the exit ramp, go through two traffic signals, and turn left onto U.S. 29 North.
- Exit 46 (Mallard Creek Church Road) -turn right off the exit ramp, go through one traffic signal, and turn left onto U.S. 29 North.
NCDOT anticipates opening I-85 later this afternoon.
