RALEIGH -NCDOT Transportation Secretary Gene Conti and Turnpike
Authority Executive Director David Joyner today signed the $367.7 million
design-build contract for the Monroe Connector/Bypass to Monroe Bypass Constructors,
a joint venture of United Infrastructure Group Inc., Boggs Paving Inc. and Anderson
Columbia Company Inc. with lead design firm Rummel, Klepper & Kahl LLP.
"This has been a long time
coming and it is time to put pen to paper and get to work," said Sec. Conti as
he signed the contract. "This project is
a great addition to our highway system to provide much needed congestion
The Authority sold bonds last week that were needed to construct,
operate and maintain the Monroe Connector/Bypass toll road, enabling
the design-build contract to be awarded.
Over the next six months, the Monroe Bypass Constructors will
work with the Authority to complete the final designs and will immediately
begin the right of way process including title work, relocation planning and
assistance, appraisals and negotiations.
"We are grateful for the team here today," said
Joyner. "I especially want to thank the
Union County and Mecklenburg County leaders who have partnered with us to make
this road a reality."
The Monroe Bypass Constructors and the Authority will
host a comprehensive community workshop on Monday, Dec. 5 from 4 to 8 p.m. at
the Union County Agricultural Center located at 3230-D Presson Road in
Monroe. Individuals interested in
reviewing the project designs and learning more about the right of way process
are encouraged to stop by during the above hours to meet the design-build and
right of way teams.
The 19.7-mile Monroe Connector/Bypass toll road
is set to open to traffic in late 2015. It will be the state's second toll
