RALEIGH - N.C. Department of Transportation Secretary Gene Conti has awarded a contract to make improvements to the Heide Trask drawbridge in Wrightsville Beach.
The $5.6 million contract was awarded to American Bridge Company of Coraopolis, Pa. Work can begin as early as Dec. 1 and be completed by March 29, 2013.
The contract includes replacing the steel grid floor, operator house and span drive motors, as well as other electrical repairs.
This is one of 11 contracts totaling $71.7 million awarded by Conti for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina. NCDOT awarded the contracts to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The bids received on the projects awarded came in about 12.2 percent, or about $10 million, below NCDOT estimates.
Since Gov. Bev Perdue took office in January of 2009, NCDOT has awarded 427 highway contracts totaling $3.4 billion to ensure that all North Carolinians have access to jobs and educational opportunities.
