RALEIGH - N.C. Department of Transportation Secretary Gene Conti has awarded a contract to improve more than 43 miles of primary and secondary roads in Robeson County.
The $6 million contract was awarded to Barnes Paving Company, Inc. of Lumberton.
Work can begin as early as Nov. 28 and be completed by Oct. 31, 2012.
The contract includes improving Interstate 74 and U.S. 74 Business in Maxton, U.S. 301 from St. Pauls to Lumberton and 11 sections of secondary roads throughout Robeson County.
This is one of 11 contracts totaling $71.7 million awarded by Conti for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina. NCDOT awarded the contracts to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The bids received on the projects awarded came in about 12.2 percent, or about $10 million, below NCDOT estimates.
Since Gov. Bev Perdue took office in January of 2009, NCDOT has awarded 427 highway contracts totaling $3.4 billion to ensure that all North Carolinians have access to jobs and educational opportunities.
