NCDOT Asks Citizens if They Want Public Hearing on Thomasville to Lexington Rail Proposal

RALEIGH -- The N.C. Department of Transportation is asking citizens if they would like the department to hold a public hearing on a proposal to upgrade a 4.2-mile section of railway from north of Upper Lake Road to south of Turner Road in Davidson County. The project would include the construction of a track parallel to the existing track and a highway bridge over the railway at Upper Lake Road and Turner Road. Both bridges will replace railroad crossings within the area, reducing the possible risk of vehicle/train collisions. Right-of-way acquisition will begin in April 2012, with construction scheduled to begin in April 2013. An Environmental Assessment for the proposed project has been completed and is available for public viewing. The assessment and a map of the project can be seen at the Lexington Branch of the Davidson County Library, located at 602 S. Main St., Lexington. Anyone interested in NCDOT holding a public hearing on the proposed project can send a registered letter by Dec. 16 to Ryan White, NCDOT Rail Project Development Engineer, 1553 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1553. For more information on the project, contact White at (919) 733-7245, Ext. 266, or by email at
