NCDOT TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETINGS ON TRAFFIC STUDY FOR RAILROAD CROSSINGS IN DURHAM

RALEIGH - The N.C. Department of Transportation will hold three public meetings on Monday, Nov. 28, Tuesday, Nov. 29 and Wednesday, Dec. 1 regarding a Traffic Separation Study (TSS) to evaluate 18 public railroad crossings, where they meet the road, between Neal Road and Cornwallis Road in Durham.

Citizens are encouraged to provide comments and suggestions related to potential safety improvements as well as possible locations.

The workshops will be held between 5 - 7 p.m. at the following locations:

  1. Downtown Durham (Gregson Street to Driver Street) -Monday, Nov. 28 at the   Durham Armory, 212 Foster Street;
  2. Western Durham (Neal Road to Buchanan Boulevard) -Tuesday, Nov. 29 at the Hilton Durham (near Duke University) -Trinity Ballroom, 3800 Hillsborough Road
  3. Eastern Durham (Ellis Road to Cornwallis Road) -Thursday, Dec.1 at the North  Carolina Biotechnology Center, Hamner Conference Center-Glaxo Galleria, 15   T.W. Alexander Drive, Research Triangle Park.

The same information and display maps will be available at all three workshops. NCDOT representatives will be present to answer questions and receive comments in order to develop recommendations for improving the railroad crossings along this corridor. The opportunity to submit written comments or questions will be provided and is encouraged. Interested citizens may attend at any time. No formal presentation will be given.

The study recommendations may include the closure of some existing railroad crossings. The goal of NCDOT is to ensure the safety of passengers and train crews, motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians, and the surrounding communities.
