RALEIGH - The N.C. Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting on Monday, Oct. 24 regarding proposed operational and safety improvements to Colington Road between U.S. 158 and the end of Colington Road. The meeting will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Kill Devil Hills Town Hall Commissioners Meeting Room located at 102 Town Hall Drive, Kill Devil Hills. NCDOT representatives will be available in an informal, open house-style setting to answer questions and gather public input regarding the proposed project. The opportunity to submit written comments or questions will be provided and is encouraged. Citizens may attend at any time during the meeting. There will not be a formal presentation.NCDOT is currently studying operational and safety improvements on 4.3 miles of Colington Road from where the road ends to U.S. 158 (Croatan Highway). Proposed improvements include widening the existing roadway to two 11-foot travel lanes, constructing four-foot paved shoulders on each side of the roadway and raising the grade of the roadway in areas that are currently flooding. The proposed project is currently scheduled for right-of-way acquisition to begin in September 2015, followed by letting the project to contract in March 2017. These dates are subject to change.
