Transportation Secretary Conti Announces Thanksgiving "Click It or Ticket" Yields 3,699 Safety Belt Violations

RALEIGH - State Transportation Secretary Gene Conti announced today that more than 3,600 drivers and passengers were cited for seat belt and child passenger safety violations during the Thanksgiving "Click It or Ticket" campaign, which was held Nov. 21-27.

"The department is committed to educating motorists about the importance of wearing a seat belt," said Conti. "Campaigns such as this one are imperative to getting this message out and I thank all of the law enforcement agencies for participating in this campaign aimed at saving lives."

State and local law enforcement officers issued the citations during more than 3,500 checkpoints and stepped-up patrols. In addition to cracking down on unrestrained drivers and passengers, officers across the state charged 973 motorists with driving while impaired. Officers also issued 3,939 criminal violations, including 841 drug charges.They recovered 41 stolen vehicles and captured 547 fugitives.

"Click It or Ticket" is administered by the N.C. Governor's Highway Safety Program.
