RALEIGH -The N.C. Department of Transportation Board of Transportation has approved five routes for use by trucks with twin trailers. The routes are as follows:
U.S. 64 between U.S. 13/17 in Martin County and N.C. 94 in Tyrrell County;
N.C. 148 (Felix Harvey Parkway) between N.C. 58 and U.S. 70 in Lenoir County;
N.C. 540 (counterclockwise) between I-40 and U.S. 64/264 in Durham, Johnston, and Wake counties;
U.S. 64 between U.S. 15/501 in Chatham County and U.S. 1 in Wake County; and
N.C. 147 between I-85 and T.W. Alexander Drive in Durham County.
Previously, trucks with twin trailers were unable to use these routes. Legislative changes in 2008 allowed NCDOT to move forward with designating routes that traffic engineering studies clearly showed could safely accommodate and had sufficient capacity to handle these trucks. These changes were needed in order for trucks to transport goods more efficiently throughout the state. Opportunities for public comment were provided before the routes were approved.
