Secretary Gene Conti has awarded a contract to resurface more than 22 miles of primary and secondary roads in Gates County. The $2.6 million contract was awarded to Rose Brothers Paving Co. Inc. of Ahoskie. Work can begin as early as April 2 and be completed by Sept. 14.The roads designated for resurfacing include: 5.32 miles of Acorn Hill Road from U.S. 158 to Sandy Cross Road; 4.24 miles of Sandy Cross Road from Acorn Hill Road to N.C. 32; 2.94 miles of Middle Swamp Road from U.S. 158 to Black Mingle Road; 2.50 miles of U.S. 158 from U.S. 158 Business to Harrells Church Road; 2.10 miles of Sugar Run Road from U.S. 158 to Bosley Road; 1.23 miles of Trotville Road from Sandy Cross Road to Hobbsville Road. 1.10 miles of U.S. 158 from beginning of lane 3 to the end of lane 3; 0.87 miles of U.S. 158 Business from Savage Street to N.C. 37/U.S. 158 Business; 0.67 miles of Lassiter Lane from Kellogg Fork Road to the dead end; 0.56 miles of Paige Riddick Road from U.S. 13 to Mallory Buck Road; 0.49 miles of U.S. 158 Business from U.S. 158 Business to Savage Street; and 0.34 miles of N.C. 37 from U.S. 158 Business to N.C. 137.This is one of 29 contracts totaling $167.9 million awarded by Conti for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina. NCDOT awarded the contracts to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The bids received on the projects awarded came in about 7.5 percent, or about $13.5 million, below NCDOT estimates. Since Gov. Bev Perdue took office in January of 2009, NCDOT has awarded 540 highway contracts totaling $3.9 billion to ensure that all North Carolinians have access to jobs and educational opportunities.
