RALEIGH - N.C. Department of Transportation Secretary Gene Conti has awarded a $2.9 million contract to Larco Construction, A Division of Branscome Inc, of Winston-Salem to resurface nearly 24 miles of roads in Stokes County. The work can start as early as July 30, with final completion set for Nov. 9.The roads designated for resurfacing include: 2.4 miles of N.C. 704 from N.C. 772 to Buffalo Road; 5.7 miles of N.C. 8/N.C. 89 from Bank Street to N.C. 268/Lynchburg Road; 5 miles of Piney Grove Church Road from N.C. 8 to N.C. 89; 4 miles of Mountain View Road from N.C. 66 to Friendship Road; and 6.5 miles of Piney Mountain Road/Brook Cove Road/Third St. from N.C. 8 to U.S. 311.Resurfacing these sections of roads will improve safety, make travel more efficient and extend the lifespan of the county's transportation network. It will also enhance the ride quality for motorists. This is one of 23 contracts totaling $246.7 million awarded by Conti for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina. NCDOT awarded the contracts to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The bids received on the projects awarded came in about 5.9 percent, or $15.4 million, below NCDOT estimates. Gov. Bev Perdue's proposed budget continues to support enhancing or expanding our transportation infrastructure. In doing so, Gov. Perdue continues to support immediate jobs in the construction sector and the goal of ensuring that our transportation network facilitates access to jobs, education and healthcare for the future.Since Gov. Perdue took office in January of 2009, NCDOT has awarded 654 highway contracts totaling $4.5 billion to ensure that all North Carolinians have access to jobs and educational opportunities.
