NCDOT Awards $3.2 Million Contract to Resurface U.S. 17 in Chowan County

RALEIGH -The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to widen and resurface 8.1 miles of U.S. 17 from the Chowan River to the Perquimans County line in Chowan County and two sections of secondary roads. The $3.2 million contract was awarded to Rose Brothers Paving Co. Inc. of Ahoskie. Work can begin Oct. 29 and is scheduled for completion by Oct. 11, 2013.The secondary roads slated for work are: 1.7 miles of Macedonia Road from Hickory Fork Road to N.C. 32; and 1.4 miles of Meadow Road from N.C. 32 to Sign Pine Road. This routine maintenance project will extend the lifespan of the pavement, improve safety and provide a smoother ride for motorists. This is one of 14 contracts totaling $100.8 million awarded by Conti in September for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina. NCDOT awarded the contracts to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The bids received on the projects awarded came in about 11.3 percent, or $12.8 million, below NCDOT estimates. Since Gov. Bev Perdue took office in January of 2009, NCDOT has awarded 712 highway contracts totaling $5 billion to ensure that all North Carolinians have access to jobs and educational opportunities. Gov. Perdue continues to support immediate jobs in the construction sector and the goal of ensuring that our transportation network facilitates access to jobs, education and healthcare for the future.
