NCDOT Awards $3.6 Million for Bridge Replacement in Guilford County

RALEIGH - N.C. Department of Transportation Secretary Gene Conti has awarded a contract to replace the bridge on Surrett Drive over U.S. 29/U.S.70/Business 85 in Guilford County. The $3.6 million contract was awarded to Yates Construction Company Inc. of Stokesdale. Work can begin as early as Aug. 27, with completion scheduled for no later than Nov. 1, 2013. Once the bridge is open, the contractor will continue landscaping and vegetation work until April 30, 2014.The existing bridge was built in 1953 and is considered structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. This means the bridge is safe, but it needs to be replaced to meet current and future traffic demands. This is one of 24 contracts totaling $119.9 million awarded by Conti in July for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina. NCDOT awarded the contracts to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The bids received on the projects awarded came in about 9.5 percent, or $12.6 million, below NCDOT estimates. Since Gov. Perdue took office in January of 2009, NCDOT has awarded 678 highway contracts totaling $4.7 billion to ensure that all North Carolinians have access to jobs and educational opportunities. Gov. Perdue continues to support immediate jobs in the construction sector and the goal of ensuring that our transportation network facilitates access to jobs, education and healthcare for the future. For more information about funding for infrastructure improvements in North Carolina, as well as other NCDOT projects and activities, visit
