RALEIGH A contract to widen and resurface 25.4 miles of N.C. 308 and N.C. 11 was awarded to Barnhill Construction Co. of Tarboro. The following two sections are slated to be widened and resurfaced: 10.6 miles of N.C. 308 from N.C. 11 to U.S. 13/17; and 14.8 miles of N.C. 11 from N.C. 305 to Indian Woods Road.Work can begin Nov. 26 and is scheduled for completion by Oct. 25, 2013.This routine maintenance project will extend the lifespan of the pavement, improve safety and provide a smoother ride for motorists.This is one of 15 contracts totaling $73.6 million awarded by North Carolina Department of Transportation Secretary Gene Conti in October for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina. NCDOT awarded the contracts to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The bids received on the projects awarded came in about 9.1 percent, or $7.4 million, below NCDOT estimates. Since Gov. Bev Perdue took office in January of 2009, NCDOT has awarded 727 highway contracts totaling $5 billion to ensure that all North Carolinians have access to jobs and educational opportunities. Gov.
