Work completed
nearly a week ahead of schedule
RALEIGH - The Winston Road (N.C. 8) bridge and the section of I-85
Business South that runs beneath the bridge in Lexington are now open to
traffic after the N.C.
Department of Transportation completed repairs to a damaged portion of the
bridge this afternoon. Earlier this year, a truck pulling a bucket truck on a
low-boy trailer hit the bridge. The accident cracked the concrete deck of the bridge and
damaged two of the six beams that support it.
On Nov. 26, NCDOT closed the bridge to traffic, as well as all lanes of I-85
Business South at the interchange, so crews could safely remove the cracked
portion of the bridge deck, replace the damaged beams with two new beams, and
repour the concrete bridge deck, sidewalks and barrier rails. They finished
those repairs today -nearly a week ahead of the original Dec. 20 completion
date.
