RALEIGH - The N.C. Department of Transportation is preparing
to make safety improvements to the intersection of U.S. 19/23 at Jones Cove
Road near Haywood Community College in Haywood County. Construction is expected
to start in October.
The project will include installing a raised concrete median
to restrict turning movements from side streets. This improvement is being made
in order to reduce the number of crashes at the intersection and streamline
When the project is complete, vehicles traveling on Jones
Cove Road will not be able to continue straight through U.S. 19/23
intersection. Vehicles traveling north on Jones Cove Road from Haywood
Community College will be able to turn right on U.S. 19/23 East toward Clyde or
left to U.S. 74, and vehicles traveling south on Jones Cove Road will only be
able to turn right to U.S. 74.
This project was identified based on recent traffic counts
and a review of crash histories at the intersection.
NCDOT has not yet identified an exact date in October when
construction will begin, but will notify the public when a date is determined.
Construction is expected to be complete by the end of 2012.
