RALEIGH - The N.C. Department of Transportation
proposes to allow trucks with twin trailers to use N.C. 147 between N.C. 540 in
Wake County and T.W. Alexander Drive in Durham County for use by truck tractors
with twin trailers. This notice is to solicit interest in holding public
hearings in Wake and Durham counties to provide for public comments regarding
this designation proposal.
Trucks with twin trailers are currently prohibited from
using this route, but per state law that can be changed under the following conditions:
- A traffic engineering study clearly shows the road can
safely accommodate and has sufficient capacity to handle twin
trailers;
- A determination of the public convenience and need for
this designation; and
- A public hearing is held or the opportunity for a
public hearing is provided in each county the designated highway passes
through and consideration is given to the comments received prior to the
designation.
NCDOT has determined the first two requirements have been
met and is asking citizens if they would like public hearings regarding the
proposal.
Anyone desiring that a public hearing be held may make a
