RALEIGH - The N.C. Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 19, regarding the proposed widening of Evans Street/Old Tar Road. The meeting will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Pitt County Shrine Club, 569 Irish Lane in Winterville.
Citizens may stop by at their convenience; there will not be a formal presentation. NCDOT representatives will be available to answer questions and receive comments. Public input will be taken into consideration as work on the project develops.
The purpose of the meeting is to present information on how widening a 3.8-mile section from Cooper Street/Worthington Road to Greenville Boulevard will provide additional capacity and improve traffic flow. In addition, the improvements will increase the level of safety for motorists and pedestrians.
The existing two-lanes will be widened to four 12-foot lanes with a 23-foot median, curb and gutter, sidewalks, and possibly bicycle lanes. The project is currently scheduled for right of way acquisition in 2018 and construction in 2020. These dates are tentative and are subject to change.
