- N.C. Department of Transportation
crews are making headway on the construction of a new interchange at Macy Grove Road and U.S. 421/ Business 40 in Kernersville. Weather permitting, NCDOT will set the bridge girders this weekend for the new Macy Grove Road bridge over U.S. 421/Business 40. The work will require crews to close U.S. 421/Business 40 between N.C. 66 in Kernersville and the I-40 split in Guilford County, beginning at 10 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15. The work is expected to be complete by 5 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 18. During this time, all traffic will be required to exit U.S. 421/Business 40 at N.C. 66 (Exit 15) and motorists should use the following signed detour routes:
- Motorists on U.S. 421/Business 40 East should take N.C. 66 (Exit 15) to I-40 East.
- Motorists on U.S. 421/Business 40 West should take I-40 West to N.C. 66 (Exit 203) to U.S. 421/Business 40 West.
- Motorists on U.S. 421/Business 40 East wishing to access East Mountain Street towards Colfax (Exit 16) should take N.C. 66 (Exit 15) to East Mountain Street.
A map of the closure and detour routes can be seen here. Local law enforcement officers will be stationed at each off-ramp intersection with N.C. 66 to assist with traffic flow for the duration of the closure.Motorists traveling through the area should be aware of trucks entering and exiting the work zone. NCDOT encourages motorists to pay attention, obey the posted speed limit, and allow extra time to reach their destinations safely. The new interchange is being constructed as part of the $38.8 million Macy Grove Road Improvement Project, which will extend the road to create a direct link between U.S. 421/ Business 40 and N.C. 150 (North Main Street) north of Kernersville. This connection will also provide a segment of the future Kernersville Loop Road, and it is expected reduce congestion in downtown Kernersville and at the N.C. 66/N.C. 150 interchange with U.S. 421/Business 40. In addition, the project will widen Macy Grove Road from two lanes to four lanes near the Industrial Park Drive intersection, extend Macy Grove Road from Old Greensboro Road to N.C. 150 and provide a new access point to the western side of Triad Park. As a result of the Macy Grove Road extension, new bridge crossings will be built over the Norfolk Southern Railroad, Old U.S. 421/East Mountain Street and Reedy Creek.Construction began in June, with final completion set for Oct. 12, 2015.For real-time travel information at any time, call 511, visit www.ncdot.gov/travel or follow NCDOT on Twitter at www.ncdot.gov/travel/twitter.
