Detour will be posted for motorists
CHARLOTTE -The N.C. Department of Transportation will temporarily close the exit ramp from I-77 South to the John Belk Freeway (Exit 9B) and the exit ramp from the I-277 Outer Loop to I-77 North (Exit 1C) from 8 p.m. Thursday, June 6, until 6 a.m. Friday, June 7, weather permitting. The ramp closures are part of a $5 million contract to preserve 15 bridges on I-77 and I-277.
Crews with HRI Bridge Co. will be working on the bridge decks, requiring the ramp closures and offsite detours. Traffic will be detoured via Morehead Street and Wilkinson Boulevard to return to I-77.
This contract was included in NCDOT's $430 million bridge plan for 2011-2012, which called for preservation, repair or replacement of 450 bridges statewide. This type of project extends the life of a bridge at a cost significantly lower than continually repairing or even replacing the bridge.
NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
