Closures are necessary to complete diamond grinding process, reset barrier walls
CHARLOTTE -Weather permitting, the N.C. Department of Transportation tonight will temporarily close the exit ramp from I-85 South to N.C. 73 (Exit 55) in Concord from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, as part of the $125.2 million I-85 widening project. Crews will be resetting barrier walls to shift traffic to the ramp's new alignment at 9 p.m. Thursday.
In addition, crews tonight will intermittently close the entrance ramp from Bruton Smith Boulevard to I-85 South from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Thursday to continue diamond grinding the pavement in the project limits. This method will improve ride quality for motorists by making the road surface smoother, while enhancing skid resistance and hydroplaning potential.
Crews also plan to open the new entrance ramp from N.C. 73 to I-85 South by 6 a.m. Thursday. Motorists had to follow a detour since the existing ramp closed Dec. 6.
