Closures are part of $125.2 million I-85 widening project
CHARLOTTE -The N.C. Department of Transportation will be working at the I-85 interchange with N.C. 73 (Exit 55) at 1 a.m. Saturday, May 4, weather permitting. Crews will be preparing to shift traffic to the new N.C. 73 bridge, part of the 6.8-mile I-85 widening project, improving I-85 from four to eight lanes from south of Bruton Smith Boulevard (Exit 49) to north of N.C. 73.
Motorists exiting I-85 North and South at N.C. 73 will only be able to go up and over the ramps between 1 a.m. and 9 a.m. Saturday while crews remove overhangs at the existing bridge.
Crews will resume work at 9 p.m. Saturday night, closing the exit ramp from I-85 South to N.C. 73, and the entrance ramp from N.C. 73 to I-85 North to safely shift traffic to the new N.C. 73 bridge. The contractor will also restripe the roadway, remove pavement markings, and reset barrier wall.
Motorists are encouraged to use George Liles Parkway to access I-85 North or South during these closures. The contractor will also post warning signs to alert traffic.
NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
