New Bridge on Cornwallis Road Opens in Johnston County Tonight, More than 3 Weeks Ahead of Schedule

RALEIGH - A new bridge on Cornwallis Road over Swift Creek in the Cleveland community, southwest of Clayton, will open to traffic this evening, more than three weeks ahead of schedule. The new bridge replaces a 41-year-old bridge that had been considered structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. Because of its condition, NCDOT had posted a weight limit on the bridge that prevented larger vehicles from using it. This new, efficient bridge meets current design standards for width, shoulders and railings, and will not have a posted weight limit.

The Swift Creek bridge had been closed since July 8, requiring drivers to use a detour. The new bridge had not been expected to be open until late this month or early November.

Crews will now begin work on the second part of a $2.4 million contract awarded to S.T. Wooten Corp. of Wilson, the replacement of a second bridge on Cornwallis Road over Mill Branch Creek. It is southwest of the Swift Creek bridge and about three miles away. A map showing both bridge locations can be found here.

The replacement of the Mill Branch Creek bridge starts Monday, Oct. 7, when the bridge will close for demolition. The contractor then has 105 days to open the new bridge on that site. The 62-year-old bridge was also structurally deficient and functionally obsolete, which means it has remained safe but was unable to properly handle the volume of traffic that now travels along Cornwallis Road. It also had to have weight limit restrictions that prevented larger vehicles from using it.

The closure means a detour will be in place, using Cleveland Road, Old Drug Store Road and South Shiloh Road.
